Ubuntu contains a number of DVD backup applications (aka "DVD rippers"). To rip encrypted DVDs, you must install libdvdcss2 the same as you would to play encrypted DVDs (see Playing DVDs).

Libdvdcss2 may not be enough for playing DVDs produced by Warner Bros (they have a JACKET_P folder as well as a txtdt file). It would require libudf to be installed on the system.

There are several different utilities targeted at Ripping DVDs on Ubuntu Linux.

Basic Instructions:

(1) Insert the DVD into drive

(2) Browse DVD files, look for one of the main video files, open and play it in VLC (looks something like VTS_02_1.VOB) to ensure it can be decrypted for playback

(3) Launch Handbrake

  • Although it is stated that Handbrake does not decrypt the DVD, once your player has accomplished decryption the DVD will be unlocked and ready for Handbrake to rip.

Using Handbrake and configuration for best results is covered in the Handbrake page.

The resulting file size and quality is based on your parameters you selected in Handbrake. Better quality is going to result in larger files. The more time you spend on encoding, and the more passes, will also improve quality, As a general rule know that small and fast will yield very poor results.
