3 Queens
Because a pawn reaching the opponent's end of the board must be immediately promoted to a queen, rook, bishop, or knight of your choosing, you may select the queen. If the other queens on the board have yet to be captured, then your promoted pawn becomes the third queen. In this respect it is possible, however unlikely, to have three or more queens, three or more rooks, three or more bishops, or three or more knights on the board at the same time. This can be problematic with chess sets that have a limited number of player pieces. No universal visual system exists for underpromotions.
Sometimes house rules allow for immediate replacement with your own captured pieces only rather than a new one, although this is not officially recognized but does deal with the issue of limited player pieces and replacement confusion.
