Root
StumpRoot
You can use Stump Root 1.2.0 to root the LG G3 for the VS98510B software release. If you have VS98511C (which Verizon has been shipping with the phone since late 2014) then this version of Stumproot will fail with the error message:
device is patched, sorry
The VS98511C Verizon update implements an "anti-rollback" feature which prevents you from using any stock restore method to go back to a version older than whatever you're on. There is no root method for the VS98511C software if you are unrooted, only the stock VS98510B software.
A NOTE ON STUMPROOT - The developer has stopped releases. Do not expect a StumpRoot for KitKat.
Towelroot
For Kitkat 4.4.2. Goto the Towelroot by Geohot (https://towelroot.com/) and download towelroot. WARNING! Do not download towelroot from towelroot.org - the one at the .org site is a trick, it contains a virus. The real towelroot is at the .com site.
TowelRoot currently provide root access on all phones with a kernel date prior to June 3 2014. (The kernel date can be found in the About page of the Settings app).
NOTE: I tested this (Verizon) and it failed with "This phone isn't currently supported" Tested with Verizon software version VS98512B, which was a Dec 05 2014 update. Tried 3 different modstrings.
- download towelroot from towelroot.com
- Go to Settings -> Security and enable installing apps from unknown sources
- install the towelroot apk (tr.apk)
- run the app and click "make it rain"
- download RootChecker from the Google Play App Store
- Run it
- After verification or root install SuperSU from the Google Play App Store
To change towelroot modstrings tap on the "Welcome to Towelroot v3" header (3) times... as in tap tap tap.
Code 1: 1337 0 1 0 4 0 (standard, works on most phones) Code 2: 1337 0 1 7380 4 0 (for Samsung Galaxy devices) Code 3: 1337 0 1 0 4 1 (universal, but give temporary root access only)
Sources advise that it is necessary to downgrade to phone software version VS98510B . After that, if you want to go back to 12b rooted, do NOT bump with TWRP. Instead, tell SuperSU to maintain root across OTAs and then take each OTA as it comes. Read from source here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-lg-g3/help/lg-g3-vs98512b-rooted-t2975180
